Quick News - CompUSA is closing 100 stores

Hey just giving another heads up for potential deal seekers out there, that CompUSA, or CompUSSR according to some, is closing close to half of their retail outlets in the US. Guess that's bad news for them, but it also means that there's a potential for some deals from them.
More news to follow if I hear about any deals, but some people don't have their hopes set high. Oh well let's see.

Been a pretty busy day for me, so whenever I checked out the Tech News sites and my other sources of news I didn't get much to talk about. Here's 2 things that were eventful.
1) AMD released a new CPU, the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+. It steps up their processor line and it's good for them to at least come close to Intel. It does lose out to the Core 2 Duo E6700, but it's not too far off. Hothardware.com has the full review.
2)I did however see this usb-powered Hello Kitty Blanket at Engadget. It's amazing how much Hello Kitty stuff there is. My ex-girlfriend would go nuts for this crap, but here's a picture.

iPhone in Canada and other Tech News

Here's my early afternoon roundup of some of the news I've found interesting to me
-Canadians are going to have to wait 6-8 months, as Blogger John Wiseman states in his blog HERE. Since there's no CDMA version of the iPhone, it's going to most likely go with Rogers, and is going to require a data plan. So some mixed news for Canadians, but at least it's coming.
-Bunch of news in the Aftermath of CES today, with Cisco and Apple slingging mud over the iPhone trademark, a really nice looking LG phone, the Shine, on Engadget and they even have some demos of IPTV over the Xbox360 (now that's pretty interesting, no cable or satellite and plenty of HDTV) over there too with pictures.
Overall some pretty cool stuff, I love tech shows, I wish they were in NYC more often. Alright more later,

Missed yesterday while repairing a friend's computer
Hey sorry about the lack of updates or news yesterday. It was far from a slow day for me, with 2 practices, then an outing with my team, and a bit of Nintendo Wii playing and some late night computer repair. I managed to install Windows XP on an ancient laptop with a P3 600mhz and 128mb RAM, good enough to run it but tough to multitask or running intensive stuff.
Apart from that I'm relaxing today, big meet tomorrow. You guys like the template? Any comments on it? I'll post some news on CES later, since I'm tired of talking about the iPhone.

Big News from MacWorld and CES

Yep, everyone knew it was coming someday, and now it's here, the Apple iPhone. There's some nice coverage from Engadget, they got pics from Steve Jobs keynote, pictures from the booth which I linked, and Apple.com has a nice picture and some specs on their website. I'm really impressed at the looks, but we'll see the battery life and how well it penetrates the market at such a high price.
As for CES, there's some nice stuff coming out, from a nice 22" Widescreen monitor from Dell, the E228WFP, there's the iRiver W10, which is a PDA/widescreen media player, and the MotoRIZR Z6. There's just so much stuff to talk about, I love it.

Tired - The in-season retraining pain
What is in-season retraining pain? It's the pain all Division 1 track runners feels after they've come back from Christmas or New Year's break and have to go through training again. I just slept for 4 hours during the middle of the day. I haven't done that in a while. I need to caught up on my CES coverage, there's really some good stuff on there, and of course MacWorld Expo start today.
I'm going to have some posts both of those, but until know let's hope my legs recover for afternoon practice.

The International CES show is underway!

If you guys don't know what CES is, then you're obviously not following technology, computing, electronics or anything related to those fields. CES is the Consumer Electronics Show, and it's held every year at the beginning of January in Las Vegas. It's the show for displaying your upcoming products, or launching new ideas, or flaunting what you've got. Big names like Bill Gates, Ed Zander (CEO of Motorola) and many others present Key Note speeches and introduce new products at the same time.
I was watching Bill Gates' keynote, pretty good, nothing spectacular, but I've been loving all the news from Engadget.com and to a lesser extend Gizmodo.com. I think if you're going to pick up a new electronic toy in the next little bit I'd check out their coverage. I'll post my interesting finds a bit later, but the 51gb HD-DVD looks promising right now.

New Tech Blog - The Tech Planet

Hey guys just letting you guys know about this new Tech Blog I've been visiting. I usually frequent Engadget, or Gizmodo for my technology and electronic/gadget news but I'm adding The Tech Planet to the list. It's a new site with a lot of potential to be as well known as the big guys.
They even got nice new gadgets like this Breathalyzer for your Cell Phone. That's really something new that could help you avoid a nice trip downtown to the police station. Don't know if you'll remember it when you're drunk but hey it's nice to see the technology. They also got some news on the $100 PC or the OLPC initiative, Hybrid Cars, and a bunch of varied but nice content. Check these out and more at The Tech Planet and post your thoughts on the site.

PSP2 to have a 60gb Hard Drive?

Just saw this little tidbit on Engadget (my favorite gadget site if you don't know by now) and there's a bunch of speculation (aka rumours) that they're going to implement a 60gb Hard Drive in the PSP2 or the refresh. There's been rumours before of the PSP refresh or PSP2, whichever you want to call it, but having a nice 60gb hard-drive inside a PSP would make it much more attractive for those who wanna watch movies or play games, since 4gb mem stick pro duo's don't come cheap.

AACS DRM (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray copy protection) cracked!

Wow this is exciting news for those movies fans. There's a guy at the Doom9 who cracked the copy protection for the new next generation of movies, namely HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. He gets a key from some of the new players and decrypts the movies to a hard drive. Engadget tested it out and they were able to get the movies on their HD but they weren't able to play them due to the crappiness of PowerDVD/WinDVD. I wonder if it'll be as easy to play as DVD's were, so we'll have to see.

Who's used a smart "whiteboard" before?

If anyone here's used a smartboard or smart "whiteboard" before they know how easy it is to use and how great it is when working with presentations and groups. The sports science department at LIU has one and we use it all the time, great for those AV presentations that are interactive. I was wondering who actually installs and buys these things and these guys from the UK at Reflex Limited actually do a lot of custom installs and AV work for many big names, like Sony, Fujitsu, etc. Way out of my league but would be great for that business needing professional work done. Last year I remember hearing a lot about the offer sites where you would complete an offer and get friends or referals to do other offers so I tried it out. I wanted an Xbox to have a nice Media PC without paying for one so I tried it out. It wasn't so bad, but it involves hassling my roomates to sign up and get them to complete offers, I had to give them money to do it, lol, but they got it done for me and I got my Xbox. Once my offers were completed it wasn't so bad and they shipped my xbox fast.
Most people I knew thought it was a scam, how can I fault them, no one gets anything for free. However it's not really free since you sign up for something and become a customer for that firm. So let's say if you do those offers and sign up for a product you like you're doing everyone a favor as you're a new customer, freepay gets paid, and you can get a free items, such as a laptop, ipod, etc. It's a nice way to get free stuff, and once I educated them they were more receptive to it. Like why would anyone not want to Choose a free gift! for signing up for Blockbuster like I did.
Freepay has a couple of sites that you might want to check out, can't hurt and you might be able to get something for yourself, like ipods.freepay.com has ipods for your holiday gifts, can't go wrong with that right?

Man I'm giving lots of love to the blogosphere lately, but so many great blogs and friends from PPP I feel it necessary to spread the love.

Just thinking of all the stuff that's coming out in time for the busy holiday season, like the new 2G Ipod Nano's, or the Microsoft Zune, or the Wii, PS3, or the classics like the DS Lite or an Xbox360 and was wondering which one you guys would like to get?
Me, I'm torn since I want a Xbox360 but I a) don't have a high-def TV yet and b) don't have the ability to play online games due to the connection at my school dorm. I'm not upgrading my computer since I'm going to wait until the new releases in the summer but maybe I might look into a portable system instead, maybe a DS, or maybe even a PSP with a little homebrew.
Any more thoughts? Or post the thing you want most for X-Mas and discuss.

I just saw this interesting online guide to buying radios from the people at electrical-guide.info. They've made a really nice looking webiste to help buyers uncover the truths and myths about radio technology. There's a lot of new technology involved in Digital Radio these days and this site should be great a great help for those who want a nice radio. They have guides on what kinds of radio best suit your family needs. They got nice pictures of the leading models or popular brands, great graphics and helpful guides. I actually enjoy the site a lot and think anyone looking into a radio this year should take a look.

Crazy Japanese See Through Refrigerator

Only the Japanese could come up with this. They got a line of see-through home appliances. A dryer, a refrigerator, something that looks like a fan/AC unit, etc. It's pretty funky, dunno if I'd grab it but thumbs up to them for thinking outside the box and making some.

That was quick, Zune hacked to wirelessly send MP3's without DRM

I knew that it wouldn't be long before someone hacked the Zune, after all it is a Microsoft device, lol. They managed to use the Zune as a portable Hard Drive or storage device, and once they figured that out it was simple for them to send MP3's renamed as image files without the DRM on them. I'm over simplifying the process but there's a much better explanation on Gizmodo with a guide to doing the hard drive mod and how to send the files. It's better they explain it since I don't think most of you guys have a Zune yet and don't really care yet.

Variety Proclaims the death of VHS

As if VHS wasn't dead already, we need Variety for confirmation. Anyways the good old magazine published an obituary for the old format. It's pretty funny and has some good tidbits in there, like how VHS had its troubles in infancy with Betamax, and how the Lion King sold over 30 million tapes, which is pretty impressive.
